Position Overview
This Refineries Analyst role at Kpler in Dubai is a truly hybrid, high-ownership position at the intersection of physical refinery market expertise and advanced data modeling. You will maintain data integrity and offline event records for individual refinery models, lead backtesting and model improvement initiatives using EIA, JODI, and IRR data, apply deep knowledge of distillation, reforming, FCC, and blending processes to optimize circuit views, and leverage Python and PostgreSQL to automate data flows and improve LP model accuracy. Because this role sits within an ambitious product expansion phase, you will serve as the subject matter expert bridging the gap between physical market reality and Kpler’s technical architecture — partnering directly with Product Engineering to build, refine, and validate the platform’s most sophisticated fundamental energy datasets.
Why This Is the Energy Analytics Career Opportunity of 2026: Refineries Analysts who combine hands-on LP modeling expertise (Aspen PIMS / AVEVA / Haverly) with Python data engineering skills and deep physical refinery market knowledge are among the rarest and most commercially valuable professionals in the global energy intelligence sector. Kpler’s platform is used by the world’s largest energy traders, oil companies, and financial institutions — making this a role where your analytical work genuinely shapes decisions worth billions of dollars in global commodity markets every day.
Key Responsibilities
Refinery Model Data Integrity & LP Tuning
- Maintain data integrity, refinery capacity records, and offline event databases for individual refinery models and regional supply/demand balances — utilizing Kpler’s internal Linear Programming model for systematic tuning and optimization
- Prioritize the validation and continuous improvement of existing refinery models — applying domain expertise and data quality rigor as the primary drivers of analytical output reliability across Kpler’s platform
- Apply deep physical understanding of refinery unit operations — distillation, reforming, FCC, catalytic cracking, and blending — to optimize circuit views and accurately model regional supply/demand dynamics
- Synthesize Kpler’s proprietary live crude flows, production data, pipeline volumes, and inventory levels into a coherent, accurate LP modeling framework that integrates seamlessly into broader Supply & Demand balances
Model Backtesting & External Data Validation
- Lead the effort to backtest and guide refinery models using authoritative external data sources — EIA (U.S. Energy Information Administration), JODI (Joint Organisations Data Initiative), IRR, and ANP — ensuring model outputs align with physical market realities
- Source, evaluate, and leverage large external refinery datasets to cross-validate Kpler’s proprietary bottom-up models — identifying discrepancies, investigating root causes, and implementing model corrections
- Apply a data-driven modeling discipline that prioritizes evidence-based calibration over assumption — ensuring Kpler’s refinery intelligence is the most reliable and market-aligned available to clients globally
Python, PostgreSQL & Data Engineering
- Source and leverage large datasets using Python and PostgreSQL to automate refinery data flows, improve model accuracy, and reduce manual data handling across the refinery analytics pipeline
- Build and maintain automated data pipelines that connect upstream crude flow inputs, offline event records, and external validation datasets into the core LP modeling framework efficiently and reliably
- Leverage AI tools such as Claude, Cursor, and similar platforms for data analysis, workflow optimization, and general productivity improvement across the refinery analytics function
Cross-Team Collaboration & Client Engagement
- Collaborate closely with Data, Product Engineering, Sales, and Analytics teams to provide critical refinery insights that directly inform Kpler’s product development roadmap and platform evolution
- Respond to internal and external data requests and client queries in a timely, accurate, and professionally confident manner — representing Kpler’s refinery expertise to the world’s leading energy market participants
- Partner with Kpler’s Product Engineering team to build, refine, and validate the platform’s most sophisticated refinery fundamental datasets — contributing to the next phase of Kpler’s global product expansion
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical or quantitative field — Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Economics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, or a closely related discipline
- Proven experience applying modeling techniques in commercial or research environments — academic qualifications alone are insufficient without demonstrated practical LP modeling application
Essential Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of professional experience as a Refinery Economist, Refining Analyst, LP Modeler, or in a closely related role with direct refinery modeling responsibility
- Deep understanding of physical refinery unit operations — distillation, catalytic reforming, FCC, hydrocracking, blending — and refinery economics including crude flows, pricing, regulatory impacts, and arbitrage dynamics
- Practical, hands-on experience using industry-standard LP software — Aspen PIMS, AVEVA Unified/Spiral, or Haverly GRTMPS — is essential and non-negotiable for functional performance in this role
- Proven experience sourcing and leveraging external authoritative data sources — EIA, JODI, IRR — to model, calibrate, and validate refinery supply and demand dynamics at regional and global levels
- Strong background in data-driven modeling, model validation, and managing complex input data integrity — including capacity records and offline events across large multi-refinery datasets
Technical Skills
- Comfortable working with Python for data analysis, automation scripting, and large dataset manipulation within a commercial energy analytics environment
- Working proficiency with PostgreSQL for data querying, pipeline management, and database interaction across refinery and energy market datasets
- Experience with data visualization tools is a desirable advantage — enabling effective communication of refinery model outputs to product and client teams
Behavioural Competencies
- Strong sense of ownership over day-to-day analytical work — with exceptional attention to detail across every aspect of refinery model maintenance and validation
- Self-starter who thrives in an ambitious, fast-moving product environment — able to independently drive analytical improvements without requiring close supervision
- Eagerness to invest significant time in individual refinery tuning and bottom-up modeling — the kind of analyst who genuinely finds depth in the details
- Driven to find, source, and apply new data to backtest and improve models — bringing intellectual curiosity and commercial pragmatism to every analytical challenge
