 Key Responsibilities

Animal Feed Facility Inspections

  • Inspect commercial feed license holders who manufacture, distribute, or store livestock feed and pet food
  • Write thorough, accurate inspection reports and communicate findings clearly to the inspected firm and the department
  • Obtain animal feed samples for laboratory analysis and submit them in a timely and compliant manner
  • Assist other Nebraska Department of Agriculture divisions as necessary to support broader regulatory operations

Regulatory Compliance & Documentation Review

  • Review labeling and production documentation for livestock feed and pet food against state and federal standards
  • Read, interpret, and explain state and federal animal feed laws clearly to business stakeholders
  • Ensure regulated firms achieve and maintain full regulatory compliance through education and enforcement
  • Comply with all protocols and procedures established by the department and at the regulated facilities visited

Field Operations & Data Capture

  • Travel independently across 18 Southeast Nebraska counties to conduct scheduled and unannounced inspections
  • Utilize electronic devices efficiently to capture and submit inspection data promptly in the field
  • Legally operate a state-owned vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment
  • Work effectively in hot, cold, or dusty environments and navigate rough terrain, stairs, and ladders as required

Communication & Cross-Division Support

  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills in all regulatory and stakeholder interactions
  • Use Microsoft Office tools including Outlook, Word, and Excel for daily reporting and correspondence
  • Support cross-division NDA initiatives and collaborate with colleagues to advance departmental goals
  • Maintain regular, reliable attendance and a professional, respectful approach consistent with Nebraska state values

 Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Educational Requirements

  • Post-high school coursework or training in agriculture, plant or animal sciences, natural sciences, or a related field required
  • Vocational certificate in electrical, mechanical, engineering, or related program field also accepted as qualification

Experience Requirements

  • Two years of experience working in a relevant agricultural, regulatory, or biological science discipline — required
  • College degree in Agriculture or Biological Science is preferred and gives applicants a strong competitive advantage
  • Prior experience in animal science, agricultural production, or regulatory compliance work highly valued

Essential Skills & Physical Requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for regulatory reporting and stakeholder engagement
