Role Overview: International Agronomist

The International Agronomist serves as the technical bridge between Winfield United’s innovation capabilities and international agricultural markets. You will leverage cutting-edge agronomic data, high-quality adjuvants, foliar nutrition products, and agricultural technology to position, develop, and market solutions with distributors, agronomists, and growers across four continents.

This is a high-impact role reporting within Land O’Lakes International business unit with responsibility for accelerating global growth through technical training, product development support, distributor relationships, and agronomic thought leadership. You will work at the intersection of agronomy science, business strategy, and international agriculture.

Key Job Responsibilities

As International Agronomist for Land O’Lakes, your responsibilities are divided into four strategic areas:

Technical Training & Product Ownership (50%)

  • Determine appropriate agronomic recommendations and technical positioning for adjuvants, plant nutrition products, crop protection products, and Winfield intellectual property in each international market
  • Provide comprehensive agronomic support and technical training to in-country staff, distributors, and field agronomists across Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and Canada
  • Serve as primary technical resource for Winfield United product development and business teams on international market applications
  • Deliver detailed classroom and field-based training programs covering product positioning, agronomy bulletins, crop tips, field diagnostics, and complaint resolution
  • Provide on-site sales support for distributors including demonstrations, grower meetings, and technical presentations
  • Build and maintain centralized repository of technical support materials, training resources, and agronomic content applicable across all international markets
  • Evaluate and pursue new business development opportunities in prioritized growth markets based on agronomic fit and market potential

Business Relationships & Market Development (20%)

  • Collaborate with in-country marketing teams to develop relevant campaigns utilizing agronomic expertise and emerging crop trends
  • Provide strategic direction to distributors on value proposition of premium adjuvant systems and integrated solutions
  • Work with basic manufacturer partners in each country to position Winfield products alongside their existing and new product portfolios
  • Build relationships with key opinion leaders, influential growers, and agricultural research institutions in each market
  • Support distributor network expansion through technical evaluation and training of prospective partners

Relationship to Winfield US Operations (15%)

  • Collaborate with US-based stakeholders including Marketing, Business Leads, and Innovation Center team to enhance awareness of international business priorities and capabilities
  • Serve as conduit between Winfield US (Riverfalls) and international teams for joint projects, knowledge sharing, and product development initiatives
  • Identify opportunities to leverage Winfield US research, insights, and product pipeline in international markets based on agronomic fit and regulatory viability
  • Assist in development and execution of talent exchange programs facilitating knowledge transfer across markets
  • Facilitate technology transfer and adaptation of US innovations to international growing conditions

Business Management & Strategic Leadership (15%)

  • Lead technical visits to large-scale and influential farms in each country, working collaboratively with local teams and distributors
  • Support identification and evaluation of prospective new distributors through technical assessments and capability discussions
  • Coordinate and host international visitors to Winfield Innovation Center, showcasing research capabilities and strengthening brand perception
  • Manage international budget for product registrations, in-country trials, field testing programs, and technical development activities
  • Track market trends, competitive landscape, and emerging agronomic challenges across regions

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this global agronomy consultant position must meet:

Educational & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, Crop Science, Soil Science, Horticulture, or business-related field PLUS minimum 10 years of industry experience
  • OR equivalent of 15+ years of successful work experience in field-facing agronomy roles
  • Demonstrated progression in technical agronomy positions with increasing responsibility

Technical Expertise (MANDATORY)

  • Expert-level knowledge of crop inputs including adjuvants, surfactants, and tank mix optimization
  • Deep expertise in crop protection products (CPP) including herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides
  • Strong understanding of plant nutrition, fertilizer programs, and foliar feeding strategies
  • Proficiency in plant physiology, growth regulators (PGRs), and biological products (biostimulants)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the agricultural industry including production practices, distribution channels, and market dynamics
  • Strong understanding of customer needs and ability to translate agronomic insights into product recommendations that drive adoption

Professional Skills

  • Exceptional ability to create and deliver engaging, informative product presentations to diverse audiences
  • Strong communication skills for training, technical discussions, and relationship building across cultures
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically (20-30% travel, primarily outside the US)
  • Willingness to adapt to varying travel schedules based on business needs and seasonal demands

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with the following qualifications will be given preference:

  • 6+ years of direct field agronomy experience working with growers and distributors
  • Hands-on experience with diverse cropping systems including specialty crops, permanent crops, and nut crops such as tomato, berries, citrus, apple, stone fruit, macadamia, and pecan
  • Proficiency in Portuguese and/or Spanish languages (highly valuable for Brazil and Mexico markets)
  • Previous international agricultural experience or work in Latin America, Africa, or multilingual environments
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Agronomy, Crop Science, or related field
  • Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) credential or equivalent professional certification
