Position Overview
This Landscape Tree Farm Laborer role at Pryor’s Nursery in Damascus, MD is a physically active, outdoors-focused, and community-connected position at the heart of one of Maryland’s most established and trusted family-owned tree farms. Daily work spans the full range of tree farm operations — planting, staking, watering, and maintaining evergreen trees across the farm, assisting with field preparation and cleanup, operating hand tools and light equipment, performing basic irrigation installation and adjustments, tagging trees for customer orders, and preparing trees for transport. The role also includes assisting customers who visit the 10-acre farm to select their Living Fences™ trees, and supporting the installation team at customer locations across the wider Washington DC metropolitan area. No CDL is required, and while prior landscaping or nursery experience is a bonus, Pryor’s welcomes enthusiastic and reliable candidates who are ready to learn and contribute to a tight-knit family team.

Key Responsibilities
Tree Planting, Staking & Farm Maintenance
- Plant, stake, water, and maintain evergreen trees — hollies, Green Giant arborvitae, and Leyland cypress — across the 10-acre Damascus farm
- Assist with field preparation and cleanup before and after planting, installation, and customer visit activities
- Perform general groundskeeping tasks — mowing, mulching, pruning, and maintaining the farm’s overall appearance and health
- Tag trees for customer orders and prepare evergreen trees for transport to customer installation sites across the metro area
Loading, Unloading & Plant Material Handling
- Help load, unload, and safely move plant material and evergreen trees — requiring consistent lifting of 50+ lbs
- Ensure all trees and plant material are handled carefully to prevent damage during loading, transport, and unloading
- Support the organisation and proper storage of all plant inventory across the Damascus farm and related operational areas
- Assist in preparing equipment, materials, and trees for daily operations and scheduled customer installations
Irrigation Installation, Checks & Adjustments
- Perform basic irrigation installation, routine system checks, and adjustments to ensure consistent water supply to all trees
- Identify irrigation issues — leaks, blockages, or coverage gaps — and report promptly to the farm supervisor for resolution
- Follow established irrigation schedules and seasonal watering requirements to maintain optimal tree health across the farm
- Support the installation of irrigation systems at customer locations as required during tree installation project assignments
Customer Site Installation & Farm Customer Support
- Assist the installation crew with Living Fences™ tree installations at customer locations across Baltimore, Northern Virginia, and the DC metro area
- Assist customers who visit the 10-acre Damascus farm — helping them select the right trees for their privacy fence projects
- Represent Pryor’s Nursery professionally and warmly to all customers — reflecting the company’s family values and community reputation
- Follow all company safety procedures during farm operations, equipment use, and customer installation activities at all times
Qualifications & Requirements
No Formal Degree Required
- No formal educational degree is required — willingness to work hard, learn, and follow instructions is the primary qualification
- Previous experience in landscaping, nursery work, tree farming, or general farm labor is preferred but absolutely not required
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically capable of performing demanding outdoor work — including consistent lifting of 50 lbs or more
- Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions — sun, heat, cold, rain — throughout the full Maryland growing season
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and perform active physical tasks for extended periods during the working day
