Position Overview

This Mechanical Engineer role at Medisal Pharmaceuticals in Abu Dhabi is a hands-on, operationally critical position responsible for the day-to-day mechanical engineering management and plant maintenance of a GMP-compliant pharmaceutical manufacturing facility specialising in IV solutions and injectable products. You will take full ownership of all on-site mechanical systems — from boilers, steam generation, and HVAC through cleanroom utilities, compressed air, water systems, pumps, and production-support equipment — ensuring continuous operational readiness across every system that directly supports Medisal’s pharmaceutical manufacturing operations. The role demands a technically strong, hands-on mechanical engineer who can troubleshoot independently, manage preventive and breakdown maintenance programmes, coordinate external contractors, support regulatory audits, and maintain the exacting documentation standards required in a GMP pharmaceutical environment.

Why This Role Matters: As Mechanical Engineer at Medisal Pharmaceuticals in Abu Dhabi, you will maintain the critical mechanical infrastructure of a GMP-certified pharmaceutical manufacturing facility producing IV solutions and injectables that directly support patient care and UAE national medicine security, apply your boiler, HVAC, and plant maintenance expertise in one of the most technically demanding and regulated manufacturing environments in the UAE, contribute to a facility where engineering excellence is inseparable from patient safety, and build a highly specialised mechanical engineering career in Abu Dhabi’s growing and strategically important pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.

Key Responsibilities

Plant Engineering & Mechanical Maintenance

  • Manage all local mechanical engineering activities for the pharmaceutical manufacturing plant — taking full personal responsibility for the operational readiness, reliability, and GMP compliance of every mechanical system on site
  • Perform hands-on, on-site repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of all mechanical systems — including boilers and steam equipment, HVAC systems, cleanroom utilities, compressed air, water treatment, pipelines, pumps, and valves
  • Take full ownership of routine plant maintenance, breakdown maintenance, and emergency repair activities — responding rapidly and effectively to minimise production downtime and protect GMP-compliant manufacturing continuity
  • Implement and execute structured preventive and predictive maintenance programmes across all plant mechanical systems — ensuring that maintenance schedules are followed, documented, and continuously improved to enhance equipment reliability and operational performance

Boiler & Utility System Management

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain boiler systems and steam generation equipment in full compliance with applicable safety standards, pressure vessel regulations, and UAE pharmaceutical manufacturing requirements
  • Coordinate statutory inspections, third-party safety checks, and official certifications related to boiler and pressure vessel operations — ensuring all legal and regulatory obligations are met on schedule
  • Maintain comprehensive logs, detailed operating records, and accurate maintenance documentation for all boiler and utility systems — ensuring records are audit-ready and fully compliant with GMP documentation standards at all times
  • Ensure the reliable performance of all critical utilities — including purified water systems, compressed air supply, steam distribution, and chilled water systems — that directly support pharmaceutical manufacturing operations and product quality

GMP Compliance, Safety & Regulatory Adherence

  • Ensure all mechanical engineering and maintenance activities are conducted in strict compliance with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), EHS (Environment, Health and Safety), and applicable UAE pharmaceutical regulatory requirements
  • Prepare and maintain SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), equipment maintenance records, calibration documentation, and engineering logbooks — ensuring all technical documentation meets GMP standards and is ready for regulatory inspection
  • Support internal audits, regulatory inspections, deviation investigations, and CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Action) implementation related to engineering systems and mechanical maintenance activities
  • Ensure that all engineering changes, equipment modifications, and system upgrades follow Medisal’s approved change control procedures — maintaining the integrity of the validated GMP manufacturing environment throughout

Local Repair & Contractor Coordination

  • Handle local repair work in-house wherever practically possible — maximising on-site repair capability to minimise production downtime, reduce dependency on external contractors, and control maintenance costs effectively
  • Coordinate and directly supervise external contractors, specialist service providers, and AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) vendors when required — ensuring all third-party work is completed safely, efficiently, and to GMP compliance standards
  • Maintain strong working relationships with equipment suppliers, spare parts vendors, and service companies — ensuring responsive, cost-effective support for all plant maintenance and repair requirements

Projects, Continuous Improvement & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Support plant modification projects, facility upgrades, and new equipment installation activities — providing hands-on mechanical engineering expertise from initial design review through commissioning and operational qualification
  • Review mechanical drawings, P&IDs, equipment layouts, and technical specifications to support project planning, equipment selection, and facility improvement initiatives across the pharmaceutical manufacturing site
  • Propose and implement improvements to enhance equipment reliability, energy efficiency, and overall operational performance — contributing to Medisal’s ongoing commitment to manufacturing excellence and operational cost optimisation
  • Work closely with Production, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Warehouse, and EHS teams — providing technical engineering support during production activities, maintenance shutdowns, and facility improvement projects

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university — this is a mandatory qualification and non-negotiable requirement for this Mechanical Engineer position at Medisal Pharmaceuticals

Experience Requirements

  • 3 to 6 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing, chemical production, or other regulated industrial manufacturing environments
  • Hands-on, demonstrated experience in plant maintenance, boiler operations, and utilities management is mandatory — candidates must be able to demonstrate real, practical on-the-tools maintenance capability
  • Prior experience working in GMP-regulated manufacturing environments is strongly preferred — familiarity with pharmaceutical manufacturing documentation, SOP compliance, and regulatory audit support is a significant advantage

Technical Skills

  • Strong working knowledge of boiler and steam generation systems — including operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and statutory compliance for pressure vessels in a regulated manufacturing context
  • Solid experience with HVAC systems and cleanroom utilities — including AHUs, chillers, and the specialised mechanical systems that maintain controlled environmental conditions in pharmaceutical cleanroom manufacturing areas
  • Proven capability in general mechanical plant maintenance and on-site repair — including compressed air systems, water treatment systems, pumps, valves, pipelines, and production-support mechanical equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical engineering drawings, P&IDs, equipment manuals, and technical specifications accurately — essential for effective maintenance management and project support
  • Familiarity with CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management Systems) is an advantage — supporting structured work order management, maintenance scheduling, and asset performance tracking

Personal Competencies

  • Strong hands-on problem-solving and technical troubleshooting ability — capable of diagnosing complex mechanical system failures and implementing effective solutions independently and under time pressure
  • High level of personal responsibility, safety consciousness, and attention to detail — essential qualities for maintaining GMP-compliant operations in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment where quality and patient safety are paramount
  • Good written and verbal communication skills — for preparing maintenance reports, breakdown analysis summaries, technical documentation, and clear cross-functional communication with production and quality teams
  • Ability to manage local engineering activities independently — self-directed, proactive, and fully capable of prioritising and resolving maintenance issues without constant supervision in a demanding pharmaceutical manufacturing environment
