Job Overview — Microbiologist Position
The Microbiologist will be responsible for conducting comprehensive microbiological testing, sample analysis, culture preparation, and laboratory quality control procedures. This position requires strong technical expertise in microbiology laboratory operations, adherence to ISO standards, and excellent documentation practices to support our quality assurance programs.
You will work in a professional laboratory environment performing routine and specialized microbiological tests on various sample types including food, water, environmental, pharmaceutical, or clinical specimens depending on the facility focus. Key Responsibilities
As an experienced Microbiologist in Abu Dhabi, your primary responsibilities will include:
Microbiological Testing & Analysis
- Conduct routine and specialized microbiological tests on samples including total viable count, coliforms, E. coli, yeast and mold, pathogens, and other microorganisms
- Perform sterility testing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and identification of microorganisms using biochemical, serological, and molecular methods
- Execute environmental monitoring programs including surface swabs, air sampling, and water testing
- Analyze test results, identify deviations, and investigate out-of-specification (OOS) results
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all laboratory activities
Sample Preparation & Culture Work
- Prepare culture media following standard protocols and manufacturer instructions
- Perform aseptic techniques for sample handling, inoculation, and subculturing
- Prepare dilutions, suspensions, and reagents for microbiological testing
- Isolate, purify, and maintain microbial cultures for identification and further analysis
- Handle samples according to chain of custody requirements and laboratory procedures
Quality Control & ISO Compliance
- Ensure all laboratory activities comply with ISO 17025, ISO 22000, or other relevant ISO standards
- Participate in internal and external laboratory audits and inspections
- Perform quality control checks on media, reagents, equipment, and test methods
- Monitor and document equipment calibration, maintenance, and performance verification
- Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) when quality issues arise
- Maintain proficiency testing programs and participate in inter-laboratory comparisons
Laboratory Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare clear, accurate, and detailed test reports for internal and external clients
- Maintain laboratory notebooks, worksheets, and electronic records according to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements
- Review and approve analytical data before releasing test results
- Track sample status and communicate results to relevant stakeholders in a timely manner
- Archive records and samples according to laboratory retention policies
Laboratory Safety & Hygiene
- Follow biosafety protocols and handle potentially hazardous microorganisms safely
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately and maintain a clean laboratory environment
- Dispose of biological waste according to environmental and safety regulations
- Participate in laboratory safety training and incident reporting
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
- Stay updated on latest microbiological testing methods, technologies, and regulatory requirements
- Participate in method validation and verification studies for new or modified test procedures
- Collaborate with quality assurance, production, and regulatory affairs teams
- Provide technical support and training to junior laboratory staff when needed
Required Qualifications & Experience
The ideal candidate for this microbiologist position in Abu Dhabi must meet the following requirements:
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Biotechnology, or closely related field (required)
- Master’s degree in Microbiology or related discipline is preferred for senior-level responsibilities
- Additional certifications in microbiology, quality control, or laboratory management are advantageous
Experience Requirements (MANDATORY)
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience working in microbiology laboratories within the UAE
- Demonstrated experience in microbiological testing across food, pharmaceutical, clinical, environmental, or industrial settings
- Proven track record of working with ISO-certified laboratories (ISO 17025, ISO 22000, or similar)
- Experience handling diverse sample types and performing multiple microbiological test methods
Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of microbiological testing principles, procedures, and methodologies
- Proficiency in aseptic techniques, culture preparation, and microbial identification methods
- Familiarity with standard microbiological methods such as BAM, USP, ISO, or pharmacopeial methods
- Understanding of ISO quality management systems including ISO 17025 and ISO 22000
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment operation including incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, and colony counters
- Competency in using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for data entry and reporting
Documentation & Communication Skills
- Excellent documentation skills with attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (Arabic is a plus)
- Ability to prepare clear technical reports and communicate results effectively
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations
