Position Overview
The Chemist at Ecolab’s Abu Dhabi / Nalco operation executes technical laboratory activities in support of technical platform development — conducting analyses and experiments on organic and inorganic substances, improving or duplicating materials, developing new processing and production methods, examining potential new technical platform applications and contributing to differentiated technology and product development. This professional collects and analyzes data, summarizes findings in written technical reports, maintains accurate laboratory notebook records, develops and selects appropriate analytical methods and tests, and ensures proprietary project innovations are protected through appropriate legal instruments including patents. Assignments span physical analysis, spectrophotometric analysis, quantitative and qualitative analysis and preferred chromatographic analysis — in support of Ecolab’s global mission of clean water, safe food, abundant energy and healthy environments.

Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Analysis & Experimental Chemistry
- Conduct analyses and experiments on organic and inorganic substances — determining and evaluating their chemical properties, behavior and potential applications within Ecolab’s Nalco water treatment and industrial chemistry technology platforms in Abu Dhabi.
- Execute experiments to improve upon or duplicate various chemical materials and substances — applying systematic experimental methodology, accurate data collection and rigorous analytical techniques to generate reliable, reproducible laboratory results.
- Conduct analyses and experiments in direct support of product applications — providing the laboratory technical foundation that enables Ecolab’s commercial teams and product managers to validate, develop and launch new water treatment and industrial chemistry solutions.
- Maintain accurate laboratory notebook records and file comprehensive reports for all experimental work — ensuring every experiment is completely documented, traceable and accessible for technical review, intellectual property protection and regulatory compliance purposes.
Technology Platform & New Product Development
- Engage in applied research to develop new methods of chemical processing or production — exploring innovative approaches to chemical formulation, synthesis or application that extend or improve Ecolab’s existing technology platforms in the Nalco water treatment and industrial chemistry space.
- Examine potential new uses for Ecolab’s existing technical platforms — identifying application opportunities that expand the commercial relevance of established technologies into new markets, industries or customer segments across the UAE and the broader Middle East region.
- Develop and select appropriate analytical methods, tests and procedures for each experimental assignment — applying professional scientific judgment to choose the most effective, efficient and technically sound approach for each specific laboratory challenge.
- Contribute to the development of differentiated technology, products, processes and systems — providing the scientific substance, experimental validation and technical documentation that underpins Ecolab’s ability to commercialize genuinely innovative chemistry solutions.
Data Analysis, Reporting & IP Protection
- Collect, analyze and interpret technical data from all laboratory experiments — applying both quantitative and qualitative analytical skills to draw sound scientific conclusions and make evidence-based recommendations for project direction and next steps.
- Summarize experimental findings in clear, professionally written technical reports — communicating complex chemical data and conclusions to project teams, technical management and cross-functional stakeholders at key project checkpoints throughout the development process.
- Develop innovative applications and extensions of existing or new products, processes, systems or methods — generating technical innovations of major commercial importance to Ecolab’s business and ensuring all proprietary innovations are protected through appropriate legal instruments including patents.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry — the mandatory educational requirement for this Ecolab / Nalco Chemist role in Abu Dhabi. Biology or Biochemistry degrees may not be a perfect fit for Nalco’s specific operational and analytical chemistry requirements.
- 3–5 years of relevant chemistry experience is preferred — ideally in the chemical blending industry (first preference) or third-party analytical laboratory environments (second preference). Candidates with 2 years may be considered but stronger experience is strongly preferred.
- Operating knowledge of analytical laboratory instrumentation — including the instruments used for physical analysis, spectrophotometric analysis, quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis and preferred chromatographic analysis in a professional chemistry laboratory.
- Previous experience working under GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) conditions is preferred — demonstrating the documentation discipline, procedural compliance and quality mindset essential for accurate, reliable laboratory work in a regulated chemistry environment.
