Position Overview
As Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Data Centers at Meinhardt Dubai, you will take full technical leadership of mechanical design packages for some of the region’s most demanding and complex data center and mission-critical projects. Your work will span the complete design lifecycle — from concept development and detailed design through tender and Issued for Construction (IFC) stages. You will develop HVAC, chilled water, ventilation, pressurization, fuel oil, drainage, and mechanical infrastructure solutions; size and select chillers, pumps, AHUs, CRAHs, FCUs, and heat exchangers; coordinate with electrical, ICT, fire, civil, structural, and BIM disciplines; review vendor submissions; mentor junior engineers; and ensure full compliance with ASHRAE, CIBSE, NFPA, and UAE/GCC regulatory standards. This is a career-defining senior engineering role in one of the world’s most respected mission-critical engineering consultancies.
Why This Role Matters: As Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at Meinhardt’s Mission Critical team in Dubai, you are at the technical heart of the data center projects that will power the UAE’s digital future — from hyperscale cloud facilities to colocation and enterprise data centers that global businesses depend on. Every chilled water system you design, every cooling strategy you optimize, and every Tier III or IV resilience solution you deliver contributes directly to the reliability and efficiency of critical digital infrastructure that must operate without fail, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In the UAE’s rapidly expanding data center market, your expertise is not just valuable — it is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design Leadership — Concept Through IFC
- Lead the full mechanical design of data center projects from initial concept through detailed design, tender documentation, and Issued for Construction (IFC) stage delivery
- Prepare, review, and approve mechanical design calculations, technical reports, specifications, schedules, and construction drawings for all assigned mission-critical projects
- Develop comprehensive HVAC, chilled water, ventilation, pressurization, fuel oil, drainage, and associated mechanical infrastructure design solutions for data center facilities
- Support and lead data center cooling strategies — including air-cooled, water-cooled, CRAH/CRAC systems, chilled water plant, free cooling, hot/cold aisle containment, and hybrid solutions
Equipment Sizing, Selection & System Design
- Prepare detailed equipment sizing and selections for chillers, cooling towers, pumps, AHUs, CRAHs, FCUs, fans, heat exchangers, fuel storage tanks, and all associated mechanical plant and systems
- Conduct HVAC load calculations, psychrometric analysis, ductwork and pipework sizing, and system schematic development for data center mechanical infrastructure design packages
- Prepare mechanical design reports, technical schedules, equipment selection documentation, and comprehensive tender packages to support project procurement and contractor engagement
- Review vendor and specialist design submissions rigorously — ensuring full compliance with project specifications, technical standards, client requirements, and applicable engineering codes
Multidisciplinary Coordination — MEP, BIM, ICT & Structural
- Coordinate closely and continuously with electrical, ICT, ELV, fire, civil, structural, architectural, and BIM teams to ensure fully integrated and clash-free design delivery across all disciplines
- Review BIM models, technical drawings, specifications, and interdisciplinary design outputs — using Revit, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam to support accurate, coordinated design production
- Participate actively in design coordination meetings, technical workshops, client design reviews, and authority approval discussions throughout the project lifecycle
- Support value engineering, risk reviews, design change management, and proactive technical problem-solving to maintain project programme, quality, and commercial performance
Standards Compliance, CFD & Team Mentorship
- Ensure all mechanical designs comply fully with applicable codes and standards — including ASHRAE, CIBSE, NFPA, UAE civil defence regulations, and relevant GCC data center design guidelines
- Demonstrate familiarity with data center CFD airflow studies, airflow management strategies, thermal performance analysis, and equipment room cooling optimization methodologies
- Mentor and guide junior mechanical engineers within the mission-critical team — supporting their technical development, design skills, and professional growth in alignment with Meinhardt’s values
- Manage design deliverables, maintain coordination across multiple project disciplines, and consistently meet project deadlines without compromising technical quality or design integrity
Qualifications & Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline — required for this senior design engineering role within Meinhardt’s Mission Critical team
- Minimum 8–12 years of professional experience in mechanical design engineering — with a clear and demonstrable track record on data center or mission-critical facility projects
- Strong technical expertise in HVAC, chilled water system design, ventilation engineering, and mechanical infrastructure for data center and high-availability building environments
- Good working understanding of data center cooling systems, redundancy requirements (N, N+1, 2N), resilience tiers, and the operational reliability standards expected of mission-critical facilities
Technical Software Skills
- Proficiency in engineering design software including HAP, IES for HVAC load and energy analysis — able to develop and validate complex cooling system designs using these tools
- Strong working proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam for mechanical design production, drawing review, and BIM coordination in a multidisciplinary project environment
- Familiarity with data center CFD analysis tools, airflow management studies, and thermal performance modeling methodologies relevant to mission-critical facility design
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office — for technical report preparation, project correspondence, specification writing, and management-level design communication
Preferred Attributes
- Experience working on hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, or edge data center projects — directly relevant to the types of projects in Meinhardt’s current Dubai mission-critical portfolio
- Experience with Tier III or Tier IV data center design requirements and the resilient mechanical infrastructure needed to meet these uptime and redundancy standards
- Strong MEP, ICT, ELV, fire, architectural, and structural coordination skills — able to manage complex multidisciplinary design interfaces efficiently and proactively
- Experience working on engineering consultancy projects within the UAE or GCC region — bringing valuable knowledge of regional codes, client expectations, and authority approval processes
